______________________________________________________________________
1. Where can I find a user manual for my phone?
Nokia user manuals can be downloaded in Acrobat Reader (.pdf) format
from the Nokia website, http://www.nokia.com/phones/usersguide/.
______________________________________________________________________
2. What is flashing/unlocking and how do I do it?
On earlier (DCT-2) phones and software versions, it is possible to
unlock your phone simply by using an MBUS cable and a piece of
software. You can use either NokiaTool or Nokall.
Newer (DCT-3) phones and software versions can be unlocked using an
MBUS cable and B-Phreaks EEPROM Tools software. These phones can also
be unlocked by replacing part of the phones software (flashing). You
need a special cable for flashing, which connects to your LPT
(parallel/printer) port and with the correct software you can reflash
your phones software. This basically means that if you have a 3310
with v04.06 and its locked, you simply need to find an unlocked v04.06
partial flash file and flash that unlocked version over your locked
version.
The newest (DCT-4) phones cannot currently be unlocked without the
use of dedicated hardware due to the firmware being encrypted.
All generations of Nokia phones can be unlocked with the unlocking
code, which can only be obtained from your network provider, usually
for a moderate fee.
Software and instructions can be found at http://www.nbrc.co.uk.
Cables can be purchased from many of the companies on the link pages.
Alternatively, if you have a knowledge of electronics/soldering etc.
then you may wish to build your own from the schematics page.
______________________________________________________________________
3. What do the different phone locks mean?
There are four different locks:
1. Provider Lock (MCC + MNC)
2. Network Lock (GID 1)
3. Provider Lock 2 (GID 2)
4. Sim Card Lock (MSIN)
The Provider Locks (1&3) locks the phone to a particular operator
e.g. Vodafone SIMs can only be used in that particular phone with that
lock enabled.
The Network Lock I have no info on (similar to the Provider Locks?).
The SIM Lock locks the phone to a single SIM card, not even another
SIM from the same operator will work – it has to be the SIM that was
provided.
______________________________________________________________________
4. Where can I find the mastercode to unlock my phone?
Mastercode generators exist for early Nokia models (DCT-2), but there
is currently nothing for the newer ones. The only place you can get
the mastercode from is your Service Provider, but you will be charged
for this (around £35).
______________________________________________________________________
5. How can I send free SMS?
There are two answers to this question:
i. Free SMS numbers are very hard to come by. I have heard that such
numbers do exist but as soon as too many people start using the number
they become useless – so the numbers are hard to find and people who
have one are reluctant to release them to others!
ii. If you want to send free text messages over the internet then
there are plenty of free SMS sites. The following are just some of
them:
http://www.unimobile.com,
http://www.textme.org,
http://www.genie.co.uk,
http://www.info-sms.co.uk,
http://www.iobox.com,
http://www.myalert.com,
http://www.textmessenger.co.uk.
______________________________________________________________________
6. How can I find out about the software version my phone is using?
To find out which software version your phone is using, type *#0000#
from the main screen. Some software also tells you this information,
such as LogoManager and NokiaTool. To find out more detail about
software versions, have a look at
http://marcin-wiacek.fkn.pl/english/index.htm.

8. How can I update my phones software?
If the phone is within warranty, a Nokia Service Centre will update
the software to the latest version free of charge.
DCT-3 phones can be up/downgraded using flash cables and MBUS cables.
You will need flashing software and FAID calculation software and the
MCU and PPM flash files for your phone. Software and instructions for
this can be found on http://www.nbrc.co.uk. There are also many
people offering this service in the links
section.____________________________________________________________________
__
9. Can I convert my phone by upgrading the software?
6210 and 6250 software is interchangeable, as is 8210 and 8250
software. The process for conversion is slightly different to
upgrading and requires the flashing of a virgin EEPROM as well as the
MCU and PPM. The instructions for phone conversion be found on
http://www.nbrc.co.uk.
Although the basic architecture of the 3310 and 3330 are very similar,
the 3330 has a larger flash to allow for the extra features available.
It is not possible to fit the software of the 3330 onto a 3310, so
this conversion is not possible.
______________________________________________________________________
10. My 3210/3310 isn’t working with DataSuite, why?
These phones are not ‘Data Compatible’ – now this doesn’t mean you
can’t upload ringtones and logos to your phone but means that you
can’t transfer data from the phone like you can with the 5110, 7110,
etc.. It is possible to modify DataSuite for use with these phones,
but only for SMS purposes. Details can be found at
http://www.nkmobile.co.uk.
______________________________________________________________________
11. Where can I download LogoManager and what does it do?
LogoManager is an excellent piece of software, developed by Mike
Bradley, that allows you to:
# Change logos by direct upload or by SMS to another phone
# Change ringtone by direct upload or by SMS to another phone
# Send SMS
# Send flashing SMS
# Explore your phone which gives you access to your phonebook, speed
dials for editing and shows you info on your phone such as the IMEI
and the security code
# Edit and save a copy of your phone book
# Edit your speed dials
# Activate Netmonitor
and a whole lot more!
You can get it from http://www.logomanager.co.uk.
______________________________________________________________________
12. Where can I download a crack for LogoManager?
It is illegal to do this. LogoManager is shareware which means you
can try it and then buy it if you like it. It is inexpensive and is
great value for money. You will not find direct links to cracks or
any other such stuff in this FAQ or on the newsgroup. Please purchase
the software if you like it – it is money well worth parting with!
Doing so will help to support this and future versions of LogoManager.
______________________________________________________________________
13. How can I get LogoManager to show a picture of my phone?
You need to first download the picture pack from
http://www.logomanager.co.uk.
Extract the contents of the zip directly into your LogoManager folder.
Now connect your phone and load up LogoManager. LogoManager should
then automatically detect and display the picture of your phone.
______________________________________________________________________
14. How do I set my logos back to the originals?
If you have LogoManager and a data cable then select the logo you want
to reset from the View menu (Startup or Operator), then goto tools and
click Set Logo To Default. That should do it.
If you sent an operator logo to somebody else’s phone through
LogoManager and they no longer want it follow these next steps:
a. Create a blank operator logo
b. Click the SMS send button
c. Select the network chooser
d. Select ‘No Country’ and ‘No Network’
e. Send the logo to the phone
They should now have there original logo back.
______________________________________________________________________
15. Why can’t I change the Startup Logo?
If the default logo is animated, this needs to be disabled before you
can upload a new one. To disable this you need to download Nokia
Profile (requires LogoManager to be installed – demo or full).
Then connect your phone up and load the program. Now you need to click
on ‘Set Defaults’ and this will remove the startup logo allowing you
to upload your own. Unfortunately, this will also erase your Speed
Dials, custom logos and tones and your Game Scores, so you will have
to re-enter the speed dials and upload any tones and logos you had
previously again.
______________________________________________________________________
16. How do I create animated Startup logos?
Unfortunately at present, there is no software available which allows
you to do this. I don’t believe it’s impossible, it’s just a case of
waiting for someone to create the software to do this!
______________________________________________________________________
17. Why won’t LogoManager show the names on my 3310?
Earlier versions of the 3310 are not capable of transferring the
names. This is a bug in the phone’s software and was fixed in v04.24.
The only way to get this feature to work is by getting your phone’s
software updated.
______________________________________________________________________
18. Why can’t I view text picture SMS on my 7110/6210?
The 7110 and the 6210 have higher screen resolutions (they’re bigger)
than other Nokia handsets and handle messages differently, removing
leading spaces from each line. For this reason, they can fit more text
(characters) on a single line than others, so when you receive them,
they may look ok on the senders phone but your phone displays them all
garbled. The ASCII pictures are dependent on spaces and new lines to
make them look right.
______________________________________________________________________
19. How can I send a flashing text message?
You can’t do this by using just your handset and writing a message.
You need to get a piece of software and a data cable for your phone.
LogoManager can do this as follows:
Go to Send SMS and write your message, any characters or words you
want to flash, simply enter \f before and after (Unicode will be
automatically selected) and send your message.
This should not be confused with a flash SMS (Mode 0) which is a SMS
that appears directly on the screen of the recipient without needing
to be opened first.
______________________________________________________________________
20. I’ve forgotten my security code, how can I find it?
If you have never altered the security code since you bought the
phone, then the default code is 12345 and in most cases should work.
However, if you have altered it and now can’t remember it, the only
way you can find it out is by getting a data cable and connecting it
up to software like LogoManager. In LogoManager, simply go to the
Phone Explorer section and your current Security Code will be
displayed amongst the other info given.
______________________________________________________________________
21. How can I make my 3210 vibrate?
The Asian model of the 3210 (NSE-9) comes with the vibrate feature
already installed. Other 3210s (NSE-8) do not have the vibrate
feature installed or activated. It is however possible to purchase a
suitable motor and put it into your 3210. The 3210 has the space for
it but it just doesn’t have the motor there. To do this you need to
buy a replica Nokia motor and you also need a piece of software to
activate the vibration menu.
Motors can be purchased from some of the sites linked from
http://www.nbrc.co.uk.
The software needed and instructions on how to fit the motor can be
found on http://www.nbrc.co.uk.
______________________________________________________________________
22. How do I get extra games on the 3210?
If your 3210 has software version 5.31 or above, it is possible to
activate two more hidden games. To do this all you need is a cable
and the Nokia Profile tool (Note: you need to have LogoManager
installed to use this tool). Connect your phone up and load Nokia
Profile, all you need to do from here is check the box next to
Enable All Games and then restart your phone – that’s it!
You should now have two extra games, React and Logic.
Get Nokia Profile from http://www.ajax.ic24.net/3210/.
______________________________________________________________________
23. What do the different options in NkProfile do?
ALS – Alternate Line Service (or Line2) only useful if your provider
allows you to have two tariffs and two numbers associated with one
SIM. When using line2 you should see a ‘2’ in the top left corner.
You change between the two lines by pressing and holding #.
CSP Override – Different providers disable/enable certain menus on
your phone – normally the ‘Call Divert’ menu. CSP allows you to
enable all the menus available on your phone.
14.4 Data – Most cellular networks handle data at 9600 baud, some
have extended this to 14400 baud (in the UK – Orange) but only a few
phones can use this function, 6150 mainly. Phones such as the 3210
and the 3310 should have this turned off as they are not data
compatible.
Display Contrast – adjust the contrast of your display. Need to
restart the phone for the changes to take effect.
999 Emergency – switch your phone to use 999 as the default emergency
number.
Enable All Games – does what it suggests (3210 only) if you have
software version 05.31 or above then it will enable two more games.
Vibration Menu – (3210 only) enables the vibration menu, you must have
a vibra motor installed to use this
Set Defaults – resets your phone to the factory defaults – removes the
animated startup logo allowing you to upload your own. Removes all
personal logos and ringtones.
NKProfile and all information about it can be found at
http://www.ajax.ic24.net/3210/.
______________________________________________________________________
24. How can I find my Nokia’s IMEI number?
You can do this by simply typing *#06# or it is also displayed in
LogoManager under the Phone Explorer menu.
______________________________________________________________________
25. How can I change the IMEI number?
This is illegal. If you have a valid reason for needing the IMEI
number changing, you should contact a Nokia Service Centre.
______________________________________________________________________
26. What is EFR and how do I activate it?
EFR stands for Enhanced Full Rate codec and is usually automatically
activated on any phone that supports it. It will give you much better
sound quality when enabled at the expense of battery consumption –
talktime is reduced by about 5%.
To activate it enter *3370# then reboot your phone
To deactivate it enter #3370# then reboot your phone
You can also choose to use Half Rate codec. This enabled will give
you reduced sound quality but give you around 30% more talktime.
To activate it enter *4720# then reboot your phone
To deactivate it enter #4720# then reboot your phone
Note: These codes may not work on all models of Nokia phones.
______________________________________________________________________
27. How do you use a Nokia as a radar detector?
Another big rumour! Completely untrue! You are as likely to get your
Nokia working as a radar detector as you are to get a radar detector
working as a phone! Nokia would have absolutely no reason to
implement this into there phones. To activate it anyway follow these
steps:
# Enter Menu
# Select Settings
# Select Security Settings
# Select Closed User Group
# Select On
# Enter 00000
# Press Ok
Now clear back to normal display and give it a few seconds, your
phone will display a radar icon! (it is in fact the Closed User Group
icon)
______________________________________________________________________
28. How do I use two SIMs in one phone?
It is possible to do this. It involves buying a dual sim accessory,
its normally a battery or a cover. The battery has two slots for the
SIM cards and then a wire with a SIM on it which slots into the
original SIM slot. To change SIMs it normally involves switching off
and on again. The battery is never as good as the original Nokia ones
so there’s less time between charges. You can also get dual SIM
covers. These work the same as the battery version but the advantage
is you get to use the original Nokia battery – but the covers tend to
be larger to compensate for the extra components etc.. Obviously, you
can only use one of the SIMs at any one time, it just allows you to
switch between the two. You can purchase them from some of the links
on http://www.nbrc.co.uk.
______________________________________________________________________
29. What is NetMonitor and what does it do?
This is a hidden menu that Nokia field engineers use to perform
various tasks on the phone and the network. The NetMonitor on Nokia
phones also has a mode which displays lots of information on the phone
and its internal functions such as temperature of the battery, amount
of times slide on 7110 has been opened, current consumption, etc..
Its a tool which appeals to adventurous people! But, if you don’t
know what your doing you can screw your phone up. Check out
http://marcin-wiacek.fkn.pl/english/index.htm for very detailed
information on the NetMonitor menu.
______________________________________________________________________
30. Should I discharge my battery every now and then?
(and other battery related enquiries)
If you are using a NiMH battery it is suggested that for the best
operation, you should allow your phones battery to discharge by
leaving it on until the phone goes dead (off). The Nokia phone
manuals recommend this should be done two to three times on a new
battery, then just do it once a week/month – whatever you prefer. It
can be discharged hundreds of times but if you start to notice that
your having to charge it up a lot because its noticeably not lasting
as long as it used to, then its time to get a new battery.
Temperature extremes will affect the ability of your battery to charge:
allow it to cool down or warm up first before charging, e.g. if you’ve
left your phone in your car and its become very cold, allow it to warm
up inside before charging – and vice-versa!
Leaving the battery in hot or cold places will reduce the capacity and
lifetime of the battery. Always try and keep the battery between
15°C and 25°C (59°F and 77°F).
A phone with a hot or cold battery may temporarily not work, even if
the battery is fully charged. Battery performance is particularly
limited in temperatures below freezing point.
The charge time from a dead NiMH to fully charged is roughly 4 hours
(based on ACP-7 charger and Nokia 3310). If your battery is taking
longer than this then your phone may be faulty – consult the place
where you purchased it from. The same goes for problems people may
experience with the full 5 battery bars not filling – 8210 users I
believe have experienced this. It will say fully charged but the
bars are not full – I believe this is also a fault.
Phones with vibrate functions enabled will probably notice that
battery time drops quickly and you’ll find you need to charge the
battery regularly. This is normal, the 3210 with the motor fitted
needs to be charged more regularly than without it. The 3310, 8210,
7110 also need regular charging with all the vibrate functions enabled
– turn the vibrate functions off for increased battery time.
______________________________________________________________________
31. What is Closed User Group (CUG)?
This is a network service which allows you to specify a group of
people whom you can call and who can call you. Even with CUG set up,
it may still be possible on some networks to call emergency numbers
such as 112.
______________________________________________________________________
32. Do different phone models produce more/less radiation?
Some mobiles produce more radiation than others. Check the table out
for more info on this.
Make Model SAR
Ericsson T28i 1.27
Siemens C35i 1.19
Nokia 6210 1.19
Samsung SGH 2400 1.17
Motorola V3690 1.13
Sony CMDZ5 1.06
Siemens S35i 0.99
Motorola P7389 0.83
Nokia 3210 0.81
Bosch GSM 909 0.81
Nokia 7110 0.76
Nokia 3310 0.75
Ericsson T18s 0.61
Nokia 8850 0.22
Source: EMC Technologies, Australia (featured in a UK newspaper)
SAR Represents the amount of radiation absorbed by the body, measured
as watts per kilogram.
According to this research, the Ericsson T28 has a higher radiation
output compared to the Nokia 8850 which produces very little. The
popular Nokia 3210 is somewhere in the middle and the newer 3310 and
the 7110 all placed at the bottom (lower radiation output). The 6210
appears to be the only Nokia phone placing high in the table.

33. What is SIM Clock Stop and does it give you free calls/sms?
This is one of the great rumours/myths that circulate, along with
radar detecting!
The code to enter is *#746025625# (*#SIM0clock#).
The ‘SIM clock’ controls the instruction rate of the microprocessor
inside your SIM just like your CPU has a clock. Just like your
computer, where the motherboard (on newer computers) can stop the CPU
clock to save power, your mobile phone does the same to your SIM to
save battery (clock running spends much more battery – not as much as
transmitting, but still a lot).
Older processors didn’t support clock stopping, they’d freeze. With
SIMs its the same thing, the *#SIM0clock# only allows you to see if
your SIM supports its clock to be stopped. It won’t actually stop it,
the phone will take care of that when the SIMs attention is required.
As an additional note, the *#SIM0clock# only shows you if the clock
can be stopped or not, the phone itself knows this on power up, you
don’t have to type that code. It cannot be turned on or off.

34. How do I (de)activate the T9 Predictive Text dictionary?
If you have turned the T9 dictionary off or have reset the phone to
its factory defaults and the T9 dictionary is no longer there, to
enable it again, simply goto Messages/Write Message/Options/Dictionary
and select your language from the list – the T9 dictionary will now be
enabled again. On some phones, you can turn the dictionary on or off
by pressing and holding Menu while writing a message.
If you want to know more about the T9 software, see
http://www.t9demo.com.
______________________________________________________________________
35. How can I change the colour of the lights (LEDs) on my phone?
It is possible to replace the green LEDs in your phone with various
other colours. The most popular replacement colour is blue. For more
information check out the links from the LED modifications section of
http://www.nbrc.co.uk.
They have LED installation guides for various phones. It is a
difficult job and involves soldering very tiny amounts, I would
suggest that you only attempt this if you have a good knowledge of
electrical components and surface-mount soldering. Most sites offer a
fitting service, which is recommended for the inexperienced.
______________________________________________________________________
36. Where can I get ringtones and logos for my phone?
For some of the following links you will need LogoManager and a data
cable to upload the ringtones and logos to your phone.
http://www.chewie.org.uk
http://www.demonoids.org
http://www.e-tones.co.uk
http://www.iobox.com
http://www.boltblue.com
http://www.logoparadise.com
http://www.nkmobile.f2s.com
http://www.logosunlimited.co.uk
http://www.darkhorse1.fsnet.co.uk/ringtones.htm
Tip: If the logos aren’t free, try right clicking and then
‘Save Picture As…’ or copy and paste into LogoManager. This also
works for some of the ringtones on some of the sites – give it a go!
______________________________________________________________________
37. What software is available to manage my phone?
While LogoManager does most tasks, there is also another piece of
software named Oxygen Phone Manager. This software allows you to read,
edit, store, load and rewrite the phonebook, import data from MS
Outlook or Lotus Notes and export the data (phonebook) back, work with
the calendar, send SMS and read them as they arrive at your phone,
save SMS folder contents, manage WAP bookmarks, edit caller group
logos and more. Features vary with the phone model and you will need
to have a data cable or IR.
Most new phones have their own PC Suite, which can be downloaded from
the Nokia website, http://www.nokia.com/phones.
______________________________________________________________________
38. What is the difference between a DLR-3 and a DLR-3P cable?
The only difference between these two cables appears to be the phone
connecting clip. The DLR-3P clip has a slimmer profile to allow the
slide of the 7110 to open while it is connected.
The function of both cables is identical and both will work, although
the 7110 slide will strike the clip of the DLR-3 if opened.
It has been suggested that the DLR-3 was incompatible with sending and
receiving faxes.
______________________________________________________________________
39. What is Send By Set?
If your phone and network supports it, you can send e-mails and faxes
from your mobile phone. You need to have different ‘sets’ (or
settings) for each type of mail (be it fax, SMS or e-mail),
e.g. if you wanted to send a fax then you would have to send the fax
using the fax set – hence ‘Send By Set’.
______________________________________________________________________
40. Where can I purchase just a SIM?
When I enquired about purchasing a Vodafone PAYG SIM at the Carphone
Warehouse I was told that the Vodafone shop would sell them but expect
to pay £20 – £30 for one! I was also informed that local mobile phone
market traders sell them for around £15 – sure enough, nearly all the

41. How do I send an e-mail from my phone?
There is a free service offered by Connectotel. They offer a kind of
‘exchange’ where you can send an e-mail by simply sending them a text
with the e-mail address and then the message, then the e-mail gets
forwarded to the address specified. To set this up all you need to do
is enter the number (see the website) in your phonebook. Then compose
a text as you would except, put the recipients e-mail address at the
start of the message.
e.g. JoeBloggs@JoeBloggs.com Hi Joe, we’ll meet at 7pm tonight.
The ‘space’ after the e-mail address is important. Obviously the
e-mail will have to be quite small as the e-mail address will take up
some of the characters. In order to receive an e-mail back to your
phone you will need to register with them (free).

44. How do I remove the strange symbol on my 7110/6210 display?
This ‘symbol’ is more than likely the ‘Line 2 Divert’ symbol. It only
seems to affect the 7110 and the 6210. It appears due to a bug in the
software when the user has changed sim cards! Its simple to remove,
all you’ll need is NkProfile (you’ll need LogoManager, demo or full
installed in order for NkProfile to work) and a data cable or IR. Now
follow these steps
(this method does not seem to work with 6210 v05.02):
# Use NkProfile to enable CSP and ALS
# Switch to Line 2 – to do this, on your phone hold #.
# Cancel all diverts – don’t worry, this won’t cancel Line 1 diverts.
The Line 2 symbol is gone!
# Switch back to Line 1 – again hold the # key
# Now disable CSP and ALS using NkProfile again – and that’s it!
This bug was fixed on the 6210 from v05.17 onwards.

45. What are the different wires for on the CARK-91?
The wires on the Nokia Car Kits should be colour coded and labelled as
follows:
RED +12V Permanent 12V supply
Connect to battery positive (12V).
BLACK GND Negative Ground
Connect to a good negative ground.
BLUE IGNS Ignition Sense
Connect to positive voltage from ignition. If not available, connect
to RED. If connected to ignition phone will automatically power up
when key is turned on and will be automatically powered down (if no
key is pressed) when the key is turned off.
YELLOW XCRM Car Radio Mute
Connects to mute wire on car radio (if available). This wire goes to
0v when in a call and if the car radio supports it, will mute it.
Max. current 200mA can be used to drive a relay (or several) to
shutdown the car radio or car speakers.
GREEN AMC Antenna Motor Control
Connects to auto-antenna motor (if available). Do not connect this
wire to the normal antenna. This wire outputs +12V when the phone is
on to make the motor control raise the antenna and to 0V when phone is
not connected or powered down. Max. current output 200mA.
